Synopsis of User Ratings and Reviews

Based on an aggregate of Automox reviews taken from the sources above, the following pros & cons have been curated by a SelectHub Market Analyst.

Pros

  • Threat Detection and Prevention: Endpoint security software provides real-time monitoring and protection against malware, ransomware and other cyber threats to safeguard sensitive data.
  • Centralized Management: IT teams can manage all endpoints from a single dashboard, simplifying the process of monitoring and responding to security incidents across the network.
  • Automation Capabilities: Many endpoint solutions offer automated threat detection and response, reducing the need for manual intervention and allowing for quicker responses to potential issues.
  • Compliance Support: These solutions help organizations meet industry-specific regulatory compliance requirements, such as GDPR or HIPAA, by ensuring data protection.

Cons

  • Resource Intensive: Some endpoint security solutions consume significant system resources, potentially slowing down devices and affecting user productivity.
  • Complex Setup: Initial setup and configuration can be time-consuming, especially for larger organizations with multiple systems.
  • False Positives: There’s a risk of frequent false positives, where legitimate files or activities are mistakenly flagged as threats. This can disrupt normal operations and require manual review.

Researcher's Summary:

Automox is an affordable endpoint, patch and vulnerability management solution that helps you streamline and automate your endpoint defense mechanism. Its base plan starts at just $1 per endpoint per month. During product testing, I found it to be extremely user-friendly and easy to navigate.

The first thing I noticed was the intuitive and efficient interface. All the options for monitoring compliant devices, adding new ones, troubleshooting and more were conveniently located on a single page. I just had to scroll down to find different controls and features.

I also loved the “activate best practice policies to reduce your risk by up to 80%” section. It recommends 14 “simple and customizable” policies to help establish a best practice 7-day patching cycle. These include four policies for cross-OS apps, three each for Windows and Linux and one for macOS. Simply choose a policy, click “Add Policy” and customize and implement it. Yes, it’s that simple!

While I didn’t find much to complain about, I think remote management could be a bit faster and may benefit from further refinement. Some users have also noted issues with its reporting capabilities.

Overall, Automox is a great option if you’re looking to automate patch management, enhance endpoint security and efficiently track inventory.

Key Features

  • Cross-Platform Patch Management: You can perform automated policy actions throughout Windows, macOS and Linux devices from a single solution. It helps you simplify patching updates by automating endpoint hardening across all devices and optimizing OS patching and remediation policies. Immediately respond to critical and zero-day vulnerabilities when patches are available.
  • Third-Party Patching: It automates patch management for OS and third-party applications. Inventories all software, hardware, patches and configuration details and provides the information in one cloud-native console. It also facilitates patch vulnerability remediation, software deployment and fixing of misconfigured systems within a single place without the requirement of multiple tools. It allows seamless deployment and installation of new third-party software.
  • Software Deployment Management: IT managers can simplify software deployment and management with a single cloud console. It enables administrators to uninstall unwanted software from endpoints. Ensure that critical software is installed and updated through automatic remediation enforcement across all devices. You can customize enforcement for workstations, individual devices or by groups and policies.
  • Policy Enforcement: It provides visibility into endpoint status and allows automation and customization of OS and third-party application patches or updates to eliminate threat vectors. You can define, enforce and modify configuration requirements. Patch all, include, exclude or set up regulations for patched OS and software. It also automates critical patches and restricts cosmetic updates using a patch severity level.
  • Role-Based Access Control: Adminis can assign different admin levels based on user needs to control system and tool access. They can also control accounts and manage users, devices, billing and patching operations through a full admin role. Manage specific server groups or patching operations using a patch admin role. Billing admins can change billing settings, add corporate cards or generate invoices. You can view configured items, generate reports or check on patching status through read-only access.
  • Automox Worklets: Security and IT ops can create, automate and enforce custom tasks on endpoints. Join the automated Worklet community to reduce vulnerabilities using extensible and reusable scripts. You can request and develop customized cyber hygiene solutions for specific business needs.

See It in Action: From Patch to Policy Management

I had the chance to test Automox's patch management and automated vulnerability remediation modules. The first thing I noticed was how easy it was to locate all the tools I needed to secure my endpoints. Automox even provided brief descriptions for features that might be confusing for first-time users. Let’s look at how some of the top features performed:

Compliant Devices

I tested the compliant devices section of Automox, the first module you encounter when opening the dashboard. It showed up-to-date connected devices based on their policy and schedule. To connect a device, I downloaded the agent and noted the access key. After installing the agent on my PC and entering the access key, the device was successfully added to the software. You can download the agent and add as many devices as you want, including your smartphone.

Once a device is connected, it shows key metrics like its IP address, whether it needs attention, OS version, scheduled patches, if any, and agent version. You can also perform actions like adding the device to a new group, applying or removing tags, running a scan and exporting or rebooting the device.

Policy Management

Automox recommends best practice policies to reduce your risk by up to 80%, which you can customize to suit your needs. Once you add a policy, you can monitor its implementation in the policy management section. It shows historical data on policy runs, including successful, pending, failed, remediation not available or not included.

Patch Management

The patch management section shows a dashboard to monitor outstanding patch counts. It prioritizes these patches from critical to low and unknown while also tracking the number of days each patch has been exposed. You can click on any count number to see the details of exposed patches and take necessary actions.

Software

The software section allows you to view details about the software associated with your device. I loved this section because Automox provides an inventory of all software deployed on your OS and gives you information on how many days it has been exposed or whether it hasn't been deployed at all.

Manage

This section lets you manually manage approvals, groups, remediations and worklet catalogs. However, if your trial or plan has expired, you’ll need to upgrade to access the worklet catalog section.

I particularly liked the remediation feature, where you can upload a CSV file to get detailed vulnerability reports. One of the things that set Automox apart is that it allows you to import CSVs directly from CrowdStrike, Qualys or Rapid7.

Reports

The reports tab provides comprehensive reports on various aspects of device management, such as patch compliance, activity logs, overview reports, needs attention reports, software inventory and policy adherence. You can customize these reports to meet specific needs and export them in various formats for further analysis or sharing.

Approach to Common Endpoint Security Challenges

  • Patch Management Inefficiency: Automox helps automatically identify and deploy critical patches for operating systems, apps and third-party software. This helps organizations stay up-to-date with security updates and mitigate vulnerabilities.
  • Configuration Drift: You can prevent configuration drift by enforcing consistent policies across endpoints. This ensures that devices are configured correctly and reduces the risk of unauthorized changes.
  • Vulnerability Exposure: Automox continuously performs endpoint monitoring for vulnerabilities, including zero-day threats. This proactive approach allows organizations to identify and address security risks before they can be exploited.
  • Compliance Enforcement Difficulties: The platform automates endpoint compliance with industry standards and regulations, helping you avoid costly fines and penalties.
  • Remote Management Challenges: Automox provides a centralized platform to manage and secure endpoints, even those outside the corporate network.
