What is OpenRefine?
Industry Specialties: Serves all industries.
OpenRefine is a free, open-source tool for manipulating and analyzing data from numerous file formats and sources. It provides methods for cleaning up inconsistent or error-prone datasets and allows users to manipulate large amounts of locally stored data. Its basic UI lets users filter, reconcile and transform data without writing code, though those with programming knowledge can extend its functionality.
Freebase initially developed the platform, which was later acquired by Google and renamed Google Refine. Now open-source, it and its documentation are supported by a community of users and contributors. It stores transformed data directly on the user’s computer, keeping it offline and private.

OpenRefine Reviews
Based on our most recent analysis, OpenRefine reviews indicate a 'great' User Satisfaction Rating of 80% based on 1 user reviews from 1 recognized software review sites.
Key Features
- Facets and Filters: Find patterns by applying facets to columns, which filter data into specific subsets. These include text, numeric, timeline and scatterplot facets, as well as customizable facets with more specialized parameters.
- Clustering: Use comparison methods to find similar but not identical entries to clean up data at a large scale rather than editing one at a time. Implement key collision, phonetic and nearest neighbor clustering methods.
- Unlimited Undo and Redo: Undo any actions that change the data, and view a project’s change history to track past edits. Revert data to previous states on the project timeline when necessary.
- Reconciliation: Match against other datasets, locally or from external sources, to cross-reference or link different datasets. External datasets must conform to the Reconciliation Service API standards to be compatible.
- Expressions: Enter formulas in GREL (General Refine Expression Language), Jython or Clojure to manipulate data. Use a built-in expressions editor to preview formulas’ effects on data and save useful formulas to reuse.
- Wikibase Integration: Load data from Wikibases such as Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. Upload data to these platforms in bulk using Wikidata schema.
Limitations
At the time of this review, these are the limitations according to user feedback:
- No official technical support is available, and any future updates or improvements must come from the open-source community.
- Basic functionality is available without writing code, but reaching the platform’s full potential requires some programming knowledge.
- Can be limited by computer processing power and local memory when working with large data quantities.
